I would look into alternatives to porcelain fixtures. They make bar sinks etc out of stainless steel that will hold up longer. You could also look into commercial fixtures (like restaurant fixtures) for the faucet. Yes you could definitely by iron pipe with the floor flange fittings to make really sturdy bars throughout your home and paint them in any color you like with metal paint. Just make sure you get those flanges screwed into studs.

Cast enamals are extremely tough too - they're basically cast iron that's been covered in a smooth finish. I have a 100 year old sink as my kitchen sink and, though it is terribly heavy, its also pretty indestructible! You may be able to find some old sinks like that at your local thrift store etc.
  • Margi, where do you live? There are so many resources out there for disabled and elderly. Let me know and I'll do some research😉

Hubby uses a shower chair that is height adjustable and the suction cup handles you can use to boost yourself up in the shower and to help lift his legs out of the tub. The iron pipes as walking assist sounds like a great way to put up sturdy handrails to help him get around.

We got bars to help with getting out of the shower and a shower seat at the Salvation Army. Both look like new and together were less then $10. They are a good place to look for walkers and wheel chairs too.

You could look into Medical Aids for the Handicapped or a Charity for the Handicapped or a Charity for the particular problem your husband suffers from might be able to help in some way........

You need to use grab bars made for the purpose. He needs to use a walker. Shower seats are available for handicap safety. There are so many organizations that assit the handicap. Look to you local village hall for recommendations. Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Senior Centers, etc.

Margi, is he a veteran? I am sure there are many organizations which would be happy to do the needed remodels/repairs which would be perfect for him. Your bathroom is narrow like mine which complicates things for a handicapped person. But one of these organizations could even do the work for you and make both of your lives easier. Please let us know how we can help you to get some help.

Get in touch with some caregiver organizations. A lot of hospitals have free seminars for caregivers. Be very careful what you build. If he was to get hurt you could be charged with neglect.
