I heard recently that if you cover the crowns of the asparagus with soil they may stop producing. Cutting the spears just below the surface will make for a much better plant.
Do you feed it in the winter.... it could just need more nutrients... Jackie Clay at Backwoods Home Magazine recommends topping the asparagus bed with 6 -12 inches of rotted manure in the late fall/early winter.. after the plants have gone to seed and died back.... pile on the manure and let it set over winter... then work it into the soil in the early spring just before the new plants start to emerge.
