Gophers, can wreck your landscape. Call your local animal control, they can set a trap. The squirrels are another story. They are real smart. I can't tell you what to do with them, unless their ruining your plants or flowers, their harmless.

If you are talking about chipmunks you can trap them in a small humane live trap and move them to another area. Preferably a wooded area about 5 miles away so they have a chance of surviving and establishing a new territory. The bucket/water trap you are speaking of is very efficient for mice--but it is disgusting!!! My husband had to empty the bucket--I couldn't do it.
To drive away gophers, place several sticks of unchewed spearmint gum in any holes you find. Not sure how but it drove them out of our church yard.
If you or if you know anyone who has snakes, keep the skin when they shed and place a good long piece in each in hole. They won't be back. Tried and true!
