I wouldn't do a funky finish. I would just sand the fireplace and put a stain finish on it. I would also take off the blue tiles and put back a tile that would pop, making the tile the talking point of the fireplace.
How you finish it should depend on where you put it when it is finished. A funky finish would work in a funky room. Post a photo of the room where it will be installed, and I can give you advice. I'm looking forward to seeing one!
Annie Sloan has paint products that can be used on wood and clear or dark wax. I used a black paint then red and clear wax on a 50 year old built in cabinet in our living room. A light blue with dark wax might work or use a dark blue with light blue on top and sand certain spots to show wear, lots of choices, if you can find a dealer they have examples.
eit would depend on where it is going, but a neutral idea might be to paint it white, distress it, put in some tile w a black design on it where the orig tile is at. it will have a clean look to it, somewhat farm house style in paint.
and could prob fit anywhere. funky may be cute if the style in your home is funky, but over all this idea or the white and black, would fit in with pretty much any style. would like to see it when you are done!
Good idea
Jackie, I'd LOVE to help you ----- just add a few photos!
Seems like you are interested in navy blue. Im using this color scheme myself at the moment . Just a word of caution if i may. When you paint something navy blue depending on the light in your room it can look like black and it can also look quite flat and dull. It will tend to absorb the light. I would suggest you look in that color range but bring it down a couple shades. maybe indigo for example, which is a rich color that isn't at all cold or flat. I‘m using sherwin williams color salty dog, which, while a darker blue is actually at least to me, quite cheerful and looks classic.every other color seems to go well with it too. All of this is a matter of personal taste. Go with what feels good to you. That’s what makes a home!
Maybe give it a marble looking finish, but just around the screen area.
You could go with a deep red and have a red, white and blue theme. Nautical is in so little flags hanging off the front at the end would be cute! The small parts can accent the tiles with blue or white. All kinds of fun! Also you can update it by painting the screen in silver metallic. Just have fun with it!
