Or you could not use dangerous chemicals, just cover the grass with ground cloth (you can get it at Walmart, or any big-box store.) The cloth blocks the sun and nutrients so the grass dies. Pour your rock over the cloth and you're finished. We did a portion of our yard that way years ago. It still looks very nice.

Applied grass killer to the area, cover with landscaping fabric, and put down the rock of your choice.
You can rent a Sod cutter... that will remove the top layer of grass and soil... then put down a good quality landscape fabric (don't cheap out here) and then gravel or stones.. you might want to leave an border (curvy looks better) to add plants and trees...

I just did this. All I used was plain old white vinegar. Worked like a charm. Put in a pump sprayer and spray away!
Fastest way to get rid of the grass is to burn it out - If you choose this method it might be a good idea to have a professional do this.
Just remember if this is not a common landscaping theme in your location - it could make you home difficult to sell. Using wood mulch would make it easier to change your mind - if you don't like it.
To kill all vegetation - horticultural vinegar 20% .
