The decking I have over my 53 year old poured concrete steps has an opening that has expanded from 1/4" to almost two inches over the last five years. I am uncertain as to what to do to repair this. Do I unscrew the decking and replace the support beam underneath or reset the decking an add a piece ? It is faced and is the top of two steps. I have tried to find a solution and haven't had acceptable advice from anyone at this point. What is the best thing to do? I'm sorry that I have no picture to post. Help!

Darline, the only way to know how to repair this is to determine exactly what has happened. If you cannot determine what has moved and why, you will need to have someone who has experience in building decks take a look and recommend a repair. A photograph probably would not give enough detail for us to understand how it was built. Best of luck to you.

  • Have a consult with a licensed contractor to determine your options. It might be just as simple as replacing a few decking boards. Depends upon the condition of the support beam(s). Here is how to hire a contractor.

Thanks Ken, It was put in by one of the contractors Lowes sends todo the work. Looking at the beams, I can see they are wood and not composite. I think maybe they hay not been treated for outdoor us, and maybe have split or started to rot? Unfortunately I probably do not have the receipt now. I will have to hire someone, I will be 76 this year and don't tackle as many repairs as I once did.
