I used sheet vinyl which just happened to look like marble. It's very economical and warm on the feet.
There are beautiful porcelain tiles that mimic marble but have less of a slip factor. Tiles also can look like wood.
How about heated tile floors? Or another alternative is sheet vinyl. Warmer under foot and extremely easy to maintain.
