You need to decide what your end goal is. Take graph paper and map it out. Are you re[placing everything? If so, demo the entire room first, once you have an end goal.
Have a plan. Set a realistic budget. Check local building codes and if DIY, pull any necessary permits. If hiring a contractor, they should pull for you. Then comes demolition - rent a dumpster if necessary. Then move any utilities, plumbing, electric, have inspected and signed off. Then work from top down, ceiling to floor. And have any interim inspections if necessary. Then have final inspection and now decorate and you are done!

Measure your room and determine if leaving fixtures where they are or moving them. Add your measurements to a search on google and compare floor plans. 6 x 8 bathroom floor plans for example. Once you have a layout that will help you decide how much is diy. But if not you will have a plan to get estimates. Search sites and or magazines for fixtures so when getting estimates you can show what you are going for. Pick up a sample tile and countertop sample. Decide on wood finishes and vanity. Have ready for contractor to include in estimate or for your budget. Good luck
First, draw out a plan. Find out where the plumbing is located for the present fixtures and see what requires moving for a new installation. Measure out for your new fixtures and see how they fit in to your scheme. Then go shopping to see what is available. You will have to look at tubs/showers, toilets, maybe a new one with extended height and low flush, vanity, faucets, towel and safety bars, paper holder.. You may want to do over the walls and floor so that would be the first thing to complete before installing fixtures. This is a big job and could be expensive so be sure to get some expertise when you do the work. Plumbing may have to be moved to suit your new plan and this requires a professional because there are air stacks, etc involved.
Thank you Janet for such a thorough answer!
