Although painting tiles seems to be a fad right now, I would dissuade you from doing your whole kitchen floor. It is not inexpensive if you buy good quality paint and brushes. The durability and longevity of the finish is questionable, especially in a heavily used area that requires frequent cleaning, such as a kitchen.

you could always cut plywood into planks and paint it.

gingham floors would be really cool too!
Don't do it. Big mistake. There is not paint for this.
Although my kitchen is so small and narrow it is a piece of cake to paint it, I have a much larger (ex kitchen) adjacent and that has been painted about 30 years. However both these floors are pine. I have painted my back hall also and that is a tile, composition unknown as it was there when we bought the house. Durability is only a question in my opinion and experience; where chairs are placed. Scraping them back and forth does cause wear, but if you put no finish over the paint it is a matter of minutes to touch that paint up. And yes all paint is expensive now. . . I used Benj Moore on my many painted floors and my husband is in the process of painting our front porch with the Home depot paint. BTW this larger floor is access to cellar, back hall, kitchen and side door and front of house. Although to front of house you can take another route., but this would be the most used floor in our house.
I've been looking into this too... my trusted site says don't try it... it will not last ... best to get a new floor...
