sorry but I wouldn't bother keeping your front door. maybe you could keep the handle, if you look around you could possibly buy a new door cheaper than fixing this one.
You can buy door skins online or at home improvement stores and apply it yourself. Google "exterior door skins" and you will find many sources with many styles and DIY instructions on removing the old veneer and attaching the new skin. If you are handy and have some help it shouldn't be too difficult. Good luck!
Re veneer and use marine varnish to seal
Ugh, is this an entry door? Just spend the money and get a steel one. But if you must keep this one, scrape all that veneer off of there and either paint it it with a good OIL base paint or coat it with several coats of OIL based Poly. It's the only stuff that will withstand the elements.
It's not worth the repair. I would imagine the inside is particle board too. Invest in a steel or fiberglass door. Either of those will out last you. Good luck.
When my wife wants something done, it gets done. Which means I've got to figure out how to fix a problem. It looks to me like this is at the bottom of the door. Is it possible to cut the offending part off and replace it a wide base plate that can either be glued on or mounted with screws. brass wouldn't look right but maybe brushed aluminum. It's a thought.
The problem comes halfway
Cheaper to replace the door than trying to repair. Steel or fiberglass like Kevin suggest. Less maintenance and long lasting. Don't warp and can be painted. I have a fiberglass door that looks like wood with an eyebrow window on top.
