All a matter of personal choice. Some people want plain, others want ornate, others want to match their house. My suggestion is to choose a style that compliments your home, any other structures and your yard. For instance, it may look out of place having a super sleek, ultra modern home with a frilly Victorian style pergola in the yard. A minus if you plan on selling the house. There are literally hundreds of free and low cost plans available on the Internet if that is the way you are leaning, or hire a landscape architect and have one built to your specifications.
There are gazebo patterns--and patterns for a myriad of other wood projects--at www.thewinfieldcollection.com. Very fun site!
