I would think they would fall over and break, and maybe hurt someone. When I put in floor to ceiling tile around a fireplace, we put in concrete backerboard called Hardiboard to support the weight of all that tile, and it was mortered onto the board.... to at least make it secure.... it would look pretty unfinished without grout.... you can make the grout lines thin and chose a color that blends with your tile. I chose a dark grey grout to go with the tavertine tiles. A wall of tile weighs a lot, just pick up all those boxes and you will see what your dealing with.
