Hi Tracie, have you considered painting it or whitewashing it? I once painted a red brick fireplace a semi-gloss white and it entirely changed the look and vibe of the room.
Yes I agree, paint would be my first thought... but depending on what it looks like, you might also be able to add some decorative tiling or wooden accents.
