Hmmm...seems like the ceiling is more of an issue than the wall. You're right about the chair rail. It doesn't make sense in a room with no chairs near the wall. You may want to consider painting the ceiling the same color as your walls, which will help tie the room together and not be such a strong contrast. if you are going to do anything to the walls, I would consider a faux board and batten look. You can modify the height and design to suit your needs. It looks something like this:

I honestly think that would be too busy. I personally like the shelves on the right side but am not crazy about the pictures on the left. How about very short book shelves on either side of the TV? I agree it needs something. Something short on the wall. What do you think?
Personally I love it just the way it is! I do like your paint color and decor! One thing you might consider is adding a long storage unit--perhaps made from kitchen cabinets--or long shelving very similar to what you have behind the couch--across the whole wall where the tv is located. If that is too much perhaps adding comfy chairs with ottomans on each side of the tv to fill in the empty space. Or I can also see shiplap on that TV wall--you could do that halfway up as well--but then you would still have that empty space on both sides of the TV to consider. If your huband still wants the chair rail--you could try it--it doesn't have to be permanent--it would be easily removed and you would just have to repair the small holes where you nailed in the chair rail. I have seen lots of chair rail in living rooms--it's just a matter of personal preference.
Hi, you have a lovely room to begin with. Paint the slanted part of your tray ceiling a lighter version of the paint you currently have on the wall. This will bring the two together. The frames on the pictures are too dark, making them stand out, I think, more than you intended. Brown the frames up a little. It will help to balance that wall. Once you make the change to the fireplace that you've shown above, it will be more of a local point than the tv wall. Nix the chair rail. It will kill the tray ceiling effect. Good luck.
I think it would chop up the room especially with the tray ceiling you have. It would look like a room chopped into three parts and make the room look shorter.
I think the Batten Board would look good or do shiplap (so popular today) on that wall. All the way up to ceiling. The dark painted area. Do off white maybe distressed a little..
I think everything on that wall is too little. I agree with bookshelves but I think tall ones and I would make them white to match the fireplace and paint the tv cabinet white also.
I think it is a lovely room. I would place a comfy chair or recliner in the space between the fireplace and TV with a floor lamp. This would create a little reading nook. The pictures on the wall in this space seem too small, specially as they are hung side by side. Perhaps hang one higher than the other to fool the eye.
I like the colors you have already in your room. The TV is too low on the wall and should be higher. If not wanting to mount on the wall, raise the unit it rests on by changing to a higher one. The ceiling could be friendlier to the rest of the room. Molding on the line connecting the two might help or painting the ceiling a lighter shade of the walls. Enjoy your lovely room.
