Hey Tammi, if you're looking to paint your coffee table you will want to prep it first by making sure its REALLY clean then you can purchase some fine grit sand paper and lightly hand sand the entire thing before cleaning it again. From there they say chalk paint does not need a primer so you could just go ahead and paint it.
