It is not quite that simple. Plans must be submitted, permits pulled, inspections performed, etc. And that is a big "IF" the patio slab is up to current code and can carry the load of the walls, etc.

Go ahead and put on your roof over your patio now and enjoy it to the fullest! Then start saving money so that when the time comes for you to upgrade, you will not be surprised by what will be required and construction costs.
Naomie is right, but you also need to make sure that your patio will support a roof. Most patios and footings aren't poured thick enough to add that much weight. A metal roof is a lighter weight, but you still have all of the lumber, which should be pressure treated.
