I had the same problem for over ten years this solid brick wall that sucked every beam of light into it's dark hole. I struggled with options i.e. drywall over, ship lap over all costing money to cover what someone had paid big bucks for. We were also in the process of removing a wall, repainting and new carpet. Finally one day I took the plunge and began whitewashing, the price was right had paint and water, a bucket and brush.

Wow - looks like it can be quite a dramatic change! Please post pictures if you do yours, I also have a large brick fireplace and might be inspired to change mine.
