Depends upon variety of tomato, but to prevent stalk being eaten by cutworms, cut a piece of newspaper on a 45° angle, about 10" long. Before planting, wrap the base of stem with the newspaper, overlapping as you go up, to maximum height of 3-4 ". Tape ends. Water and fertilize the planting hole, add 1T Epsom salts. Plant tomato, leaving 12"-18" on each side of stem (depends on variety). Mulch, but do not cover center stem. Remove "suckers" that grow between the side stems, to encourage growth. Feed again, halfway through the season. Water from the base, to prevent sunscald. Remove weeds as needed.
How thick they get depends on the variety, the amount of sun they get, the weather, moisture, nutrients given to it, all kinds of things. The thickness they get also occurs over time. By the end of the season, you may have really thick stalks. Treat them right, water and fertilize as needed and you may be surprised how big the plants get.
