I just read an article that plain ol' table salt, sprinkled liberally on the carpet and allowed to sit for 24 hours will kill fleas AND their eggs. Vacuum thoroughly after 24 hours. Can't verify it as we don't have pets, but sounded like a cheap, natural fix!
orthoborate powder -- 'Flea Buster' - use on your upholstered furniture as well ... very safe .... and it works!
Before all the wonderful flea products on the market I would tell my clients to vacumm up moth balls each time before you vacummn. That kills the larva and eggs of many creepy crawly creatures! Also Borax works great sprinkled around baseboards, under cushions. If infestation is bad, flea bomb your house and treat your "babies" with a good flea treatment.
Get some 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax, and put it in a glass jar with lots of holes poked in the lid to shake it all over the carpets, and can even do the upholstry. Leave for 3 hours and then vacuum up. Safe for pets.
You can also get a flea trap, they work great, I have one in each room.... https://www.amazon.com/Safer-Brand-Victor-M230A-Ultimate/dp/B000668Z96/ref=sr_1_6?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1531497908&sr=1-6&keywords=flea+trap
If you have cats, I put folded towels down for them, and shake them out every couple days, and wash weekly. For my cat, I brush some food grade diatomceous earth into her fur using another shaker bottle. I'm careful not to get her head or face.
Fleas hatch every 9 days, so if your infested, you will need to repeat in 9 days. Vacuuming daily helps too, besure to vacuum under furniture and along the walls, empty the container outside daily. Washing floors also helps.
Diatomaceous earth, food grade. then vac with a shop vac, not a regular vac as it will ruin your regular vac. May have to use it several times. My son bought a house with this problem but after treating it x2 with this no more fleas. Will not hurt you or your pets, just cover your face when you are applying it as like any powder not good to inhale a lot of it but once it settles you are good. Can use it on your pets also.
If you are vacuuming all the fabric and carpet you should probably throw out the garbage bag after vacuuming up all the fleas.
We had a flea infestation earlier this year. I used diatomaceous earth (food grade) and 20 Mule Team Borax. Sprinkled on carpet and worked in with a brush. Leave for a couple of days and vacuum. Check to see if the fleas are gone by placing a shallow container, like a lid, filled with water and a little dish soap under a light where you are finding fleas. The fleas go to the light or the heat, fall in the water and drown.
