cabbage like lettuce build from the inside out.
Cabbage grows its 'outside' leaves for a while then the leaves in the center of the plant start growing 'together' to form a teeny-tiny head. Then, as the cabbage grows, the size of the head gets larger. When the weather gets real hot, like it is now, cabbage does not do well; it should be planted in the garden early in the spring. I live in a growing zone of 4 and I transplant my cabbage plants in the garden in early April. The frost doesn't hurt my plants and they have nice cool weather in which to grow. Best of all, there isn't any bugs to bother them.
