How can I diffuse light?

My staircase has 2 half moon uplit sconces. It's all good looking up, but going down, it's blinding. How can I remedy that? I thought about cutting some pierced metal pieces to lay across the top of the fixtures. Any other ideas?

First of all, can you decrease the bulb wattage? If it's LED, it can be overpowering. If incandescent, try soft white, in 40 watt, or try pink light bulbs, if available in your area. You might try painting the globe, using a heat safe paint that diffuses the light, or gluing pieces of colored glass tile to the globe, to increase its height and shirld your eyes.

I like the idea of the pierced metal. Will cut down the light but still allow heat to dissipate.

You might be able to cut a half moon shape to fit the opening from parchment paper or have a glazer cut some from art glass.

What kind of bulbs do your fixtures presently have? I am guessing small or narrow neck incandescent? If you swapped them with LED bulbs (which now are available in chandelier styes) you would not have to be concerned with heat build up under the diffusers.
