Screen Door question

Question

We have a double wide manufactured home with a large awning off the back that slopes down. We wanted to put screen doors on our back porch (French Doors) but the slope of the roof will not allow the screen doors to open. We considered installing them with a 'barn door' type but aren't sure how (or if) this would work.

I’m guessing you would conclude by saying if they opened to the outside, they would hit the underside of the awning. I don’t know if barn door style screen doors would be bug tight, but you will need to think outside the box. They will need to slide, or roll down. I’m wondering if you could come up with narrower panels that could spin, so if you walked between two of them it would be enough open space. It’s an interesting problem to solve! The other possibility would be to try and raise the awning.

This site is one of the manufacturers of folding exterior doors. I think I’d find where they’re sold and take a close look at them to see if there’s a DIY to make something similar regarding hinges, etc. Best of creative luck to you.

There are also retractable screen doors. Thy work well, tho not necessarily cheap. And they aren’t annoying in the winter when your hands are full of packages.

My friend painted a simple design on hers so she’d (and her gang) would remember the screen was in place and not bust thru. That was her second one.

Hi Patti! Sometimes screen doors can be a pain when your space isn't made for it. I recently just got this magnetic screen from Amazon that works really well! It attaches to the door frame so you can have your door wide open with the screen blocking out the bugs. The only tricky thing is it has to be installed on the inside so sometimes it gets in the way when you want to go in and out of the doors. We hope this helps!
