What to do with this Built in
This is my basement Built in, it's stained dark with a lot of sealer on it. We are remodeling, everything will be dark grey stained wood flooring, pale grey walls. It just doesn't fit (color wise) but I don't have it in me to paint it correctly. There are 210 screws in the hinges alone! I don't know how to make it lighter, without taking it apart. I am removing those shelves and painting the fake wood paneling ( probably soft white?) Any suggestions? or leave it wood and deal with it? =) thank you

Hi Symea! I feel your pain. May I suggest breaking this up into several smaller tasks that can be done at separate times? First off, I agree with painting the upper section behind the shelves. I suggest stark white to contrast your grey, but that's just me.
I would leave the shelves, trim and lower sections the current color at this time. After you finish the rest of the room, revisit the rest of the cabinet. At that point in time, you will probably feel more motivated to remove the hardware and paint.
Another option could be to remove the lower doors and make it an open shelving painted white.
Regardless, don't skip using a primer like Kilz before you paint any of it. With all the varnish you described, if you don't prime it the paint will get nicked and scratched within a year and your project becomes much, much bigger.
I like the idea because after a big remodel, I'm gonna have to take a break! I accidentally hit "resolved" and I don't know how to undo it- oops
Lol.... I can't help with that one! You could re-post your question. 🤣
Leave the cabinet and paint the paneled wall behind it. Use primer first - Kilz and then choose a lighter color paint. It will brighten up the space without having the paint that entire huge cabinet.
