Paint the handrail a water color like a pretty blue and wrap a white rope around them.
You can wrap them with rope! You glue down one end and wrap rope around till you get to a support cut and glue end where you can’t see it, or give it a tight (with glue) naughtical knot. Then start on next section.... OR, paint it red, or blue, and add the rope knots to the ends .
You can also just use a thick rope to create a bannister.
Another version of the rope bannister idea.
An interior designer I know has her studio in an old townhouse. She replaced handrails with beautiful fluted curtain poles in antique gold. They are stunning. I've been dreaming of doing the same to my rails that look exactly like yours.

The rope ideas are very pretty but they may not be up to code and offer very little help when descending or walking up the stairs. I know that in my township they would not be up to code and that includes your current railing, too. Our area requires a return on both the start and end of the railing. If someone was to get hurt and fall down the stairs due to the handrail, would your homeowners insurance cover the accident? Again, I love the rope idea but I see liability problems.
