Eliminating standing water is the first step to remove breeding spots. We planted a citronella plant in the yard near the patio. We don't have a big mosquito problem in our arid climate, and the county does have an aggressive mosquito control program.
YES! I have a friend who swears by it and she says it will last all summer! She is in a very mosquito-laden area! She put it in a sprayer and says it also gets rid of flies.

Citronella candles / torches depending on what is above the area! I notice that there are fewer mosquitoes when the grass is cut short.

Set up a couple fans. Flying insects do not like the breeze and will stay away.
