How do we cover this area around the tree?
Grass does not
grow around this area due to the shade of the tree. We’ve tried to plant different kinds of grass but nothing grows. Suggestions as to what to do with this area?

there are great shade loving plants available. Have you considered that?
Plant hostas, they love the shade and come in a variety of leaf colors and they bloom
in the summer and most bugs and deer don't like them. They can become very large
so don't plant too close together. Often times people are glad to share some of the
hostas they have so look around and see if you can get them for free.
Hostas and ferns grow beautifully together. Also, mulch around tree would look nice with a couple of potted plants. A water feature would look good and sound nice. Fill in with gravel and put couple of Adirondack Chairs. I can think of a million things to do with this. LOL!
