Be sure to prune it every year when it goes dormant. Give it a good drink of water once a week and let the water soak down. Feed it a banana once in a while
Im not sure where you live but I have always thought roses were easy and beautiful. During the summer prune the dead heads off as the die. Always cut down just above the third or fifth leaf. I do the main pruning in the spring as they start to turn green, prune the branches down to the green. This is the time to shape the bushes, if there are any branches growing in a direction you don't want remove them completely. I know it's scary, they will grow.
Good loam soil with compost, granular rose food, Preen to keep weeds down, mulch to keep soil moisture from evaporating too rapidly, perlite if you need improved drainage. Roses are heavy feeders and need watered from below, regularly. They also require good air circulation, so do not crowd them.
Plant garlic and marigolds near by to keep bugs away. Treat your yard for Japanese Beele grubs, in the spring. Trim back roses in late winter or very early spring. Pick up all dropped rose petals to prevent bugs from hiding under them. If roses develop black spots, spray in the evening with baking soda and water.
Japanese Beetles are a menace to roses.....they love the roses and they love the leaves. Is a constant battle here.
