Hi Denise, I used cheap wood stakes (You can usually buy a big bundle of them really inexpensively) and 2x6s to frame up my garage slab, that would work just fine for a sidewalk as well.
Use 2x4s, 3 and a half inches is thick enough for a walk, and you will use less concrete.
