Recycled tire rubber. Just google playground mats. Lots of the parks in our area are covered with this. Causes less injuries when the little ones fall down.
make a 2 x 4 frame to contain what ever you put down; kill all the grass/weeds in that area with heavy black plastic bags; let the heat from the sun 'cook' the grass; LARGE AREA WEED-GRASS CONTROL http://homeguides.sfgate.com/kill-weeds-plastic-sheeting-before-planting-garden-95776.html once the grass is dead, cover with a heavy duty landscape cloth, and then a layer of sand, or mulch, or a rubber chip product -- https://rubbermulch.com/
Hi Web21507708, I'd use composite wood for the floor. It's a little more expensive that plain lumber but, as far as I'm concerned, it's much better than regular lumber that will be out in the weather. Composite wood does not rot, never needs to be painted or sealed, always looks good {when kept clean}, and cuts just like wood so a deck, porch, floor, etc., can be made any shape and size desired. Also, if the grandchildren fall on it, it's won't tear their skin like concrete will.
Untreated wood chips or "pea" gravel.
If you can get the soft plastic puzzle pieces that are about a foot square, they are safe, cheap at dollar and discount stores, and soft to run and fall on. I think that’s the best. ☺️
Thank you everyone. Great suggestions!
