Hi there, honestly I'm not sure how to "paint" using mortar... If you thinned it down with water (if its water based) you may be able to get it into a thinner consistency so then you could actually paint it...
painting may be difficult, but given a good scrub with baking soda will reveal the charm
Are you talking about German Schmear mortar washing a fireplace? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBQFvb-5xVo you don't use glass tile mortar. Just use plain old white mortar .... much cheaper too.
