They make tile paint just for that purpose if painting the backsplash tile is something you would consider. You could also cover it with a different kind of backsplash. Nowadays they make sheets that just stick on that look absolutely gorgeous like real tile, stone etc. but much easier to work with and apply.
Hi Regina, have you thought about using a stencil and some acrylic paints in the colors you love to stencil a few random tiles on your backsplash? It might add the pizzaz you want without a huge investment (except for time) . You could do as many or as few as you wish. It just might be the biggest bang for your buck! :)
I like the splash of color the one wall on the left gives that area, perhaps you could extend that color further into the kitchen? Perhaps putting that color on your back splash would help, stenciling would allow you to bring in the color without covering the whole backsplash in a brighter color, if that is the look you want. Perhaps also bring in a couple of things in that color as your accent color on the counter.
What about painting a design on the raised portion of the panels on the inside area of your cabinet doors? If you don't like the look perhaps you can repaint the panelled area.
If you r on a budget, check out vinyl wallpaper. So many patterns which include stone, tile and brick. Totally washable and easily changed out. I did a friend's backsplash and since she had open cabinets with no doors, I did the wall in back of cabinets. Looks like gray brick. Really nice.
I would just add some color to the appliances or a canister set. the tile is so well done it seems a shame to cover it. how about adding some color to your window with glass shelves and colored glass.
I always thought that a glaze (unless white) makes a cabinet look dirty. Like there is dirt and grease stuck in the corners. I'd leave the cabinets as is and do the stenciling on assorted tiles (not every single one). You could remove the wood valence over the window and get curtains with a pop of color too.
I would dissuade you from glazing or painting the cabinets. Materials and tools are not cheap, and both patience and time will be required. It is a great deal of work, and often diyers inexperienced in these kinds of projects find that half way through, it is like they have opened a large can of worms!
If you want to add more colour to the kitchen, how about putting some bright knobs or handles on the cupboard doors? Besides being a fast and easy way to brighten up a space, having hardware on the doors will help preserve them and keep them clean.
I agree with Flipturn: some type of pulls on the cabinet would change things greatly, even if they are not bright colors. You could also buy some cheaper knobs and paint them yourself. Nancy mentioned the color on the wall. It is a beautiful choice. and would like nice if repeated in the kitchen. You could buy knobs to bring that color into the room. I bought wood knobs online for very cheap. Your floor and your paint are very dark, so I would keep the white on the cabinets and the backsplash.
Polly mentioned canisters-I fully agree, you could even add a contrasting color. If you can remove the piece over the sink, it would go a long way, but you can still add a little valance over the window and even set it high so it does not block the light. It would go a long way in adding another pop of color. A bright rug in front of the sink, new knobs, and bright accessories on the counter are all you need. Please post the after picture. We are all waiting to see.
