Refinishing furniture with excessive details
I am interested in refinishing my bedroom furniture striving for a grayish finish. Currently it is very dark. The biggest issue is the deep detail on every piece. Any suggestions on getting through the varnish? Sanding is not an option.

Bead blasting will do it.
I would use Citrisrtip stripper and small brass brushes. Another option is to find small dowels that will fit the grooves. Wrap sand paper around the dowel and sand.
These natural based strippers are your best friend when it comes to refinishing detailed furniture.

I have used this on several antique pieces with deep detailing such as yours. You will need to prepare to have time for this to sit and work gently. This is a slower process than harsher chemicals. Just follow the directions. Allow the stripper to sit and use small old toothbrushes and small plastic scrapers to get in the grooves gently. I additionally used toothpicks for deep areas. Repeat as needed through the layers.
Be patient, your furniture's detailing is beautiful and deserves going slow and gently to preserve its beauty for many more years.
I would use a small wire brush & citristrip. Be sure to be near an open window / well ventilated area.

If you're going to paint, you can use a liquid sandpaper/deglosser. There is no need to strip it. If you are restraining it, then the other home talkers have given you great advice.
Use a wire brush and stripper if needed to get crevices cleaned of then lightly sand with fine sandpaper. Use dry brush and clean all surfaces well before applying new finish
