You have to use painters tape and tape out your grid on the wall. Spread your joint compound over it in a layer & remove tape before it drys. I’d tape it all but joint compound it & remove tape in small sections. Let dry completely before you paint.
there are stencils for this too, I can't tape a straight line ha ha, hope this helps xx

Saw this on Youtube. They are touting their products, but the idea is to use a stencil that has some little thickness to it and once applied to the walls, you then go over it with a stone/mortar compound (lightweight) - the video shows how it's done and the result is very real looking "brick." https://youtu.be/zllHde3z5u0
