You would need to use a drum sander to remove the paint down to bare wood. You can rent one at Home Depot. Also instruct you how to use it. ONE TIP: Do not let it run in one spot. It will gouge the wood.
You absolutely can! It would be a lot of work, but possible. It might be worth to rent a commercial floor sander from Home Depot or Lowe's?
Sanding would be good if it will remove layers of paint. If sanding does not do the trick or takes a long time, there may be a need to use Citristrip to take off the many layers. Your floor will be beautiful when done with a rich wood color and sealer.
Fur? No. But Fir, yes!
FIR FLOORS CAN BE SANDED. IF PAINTED U COULD USE A STRIPPER AND THEN SAND FLOORS WITH A MACHINE. THERE ARE DIFFERENT MACHINES FOR THIS. USE APPROPRIATE STAIN AND SEALER FOR FIR.
Because these floors are so old, there is a good chance the paint on them contains lead. This is something to check out before you sand them down and end up with lead poisoning.
