How can I stop peeling paint on a porch?

We are repainting our front porch due to peeling paint. We painted over porch paint about 2 years ago with a darker color porch paint. There is a great deal of peeling paint now as if the paints did not adhere to each other. We have sanded some of the porch in the worst spots. After we get the loose paint off, can we prime over the rest of the paint and not have anymore peeling to deal with after repainting the porch? Also the edges of the porch are the worst. Once we prime and put on 2 coats of porch paint will this protect the edges enough to not peel again?

Unfortunately the only way to prevent peeling is to totally strip the paint. We used a heat gun, took forever, but so far it's lasted 10 years. Be sure to sand off residue and prime with exterior oil based primer, lightly sand again, then 2 coat with a high quality exterior latex. The secret is the exterior oil based primer.

You also need to clean after sanding but before painting. TSP is great for this step.

The key to keep the paint from peeling is to properly prepare the surface. For the best results sand off all of the old paint, down to the wood. Paint on a layer of primer followed by 2 coats of exterior paint. Make sure you allow every layer to dry completely before painting on the next! It won't last forever, as no paint job does, but it will wear well & will last several years.

    Hello,

Call customer service listed on your paint can. Paint companies are extremely helpful with customer support —even supplying replacement product when a failure occurs. I had the wood knot bleed through on a porch ceiling that as successfully resolved with free replacement product.

One of my favorite primers was found this way.
