Ruth, a photo would be very helpful. I'd love to see what you have to work with. Thanks!
Great idea! My 99 Cent Store sells really nice annuals, and mums are perfect for this! I buy a bunch and set in pots around the patio and front porch. Switch out summer color pillows for fall colored ones. Easy way is to make pillow covers for the ones you already have. There are tons of no sew options to accomplish this. Real or faux pumpkins are always fun too. If entertaining at night real or battery operated candles are nice too.
If you live on or close to the beach for winter gale weather, you put everything that can blow around away in the garage. I always trim the branches around the house back so nothing is slapping against the house. We get some fearsome gales here with up to 100 mph winds. I even tie my trash can with a bungie cord to my back rail. Everything else is in the garage or shed.
I also trim all the shrubs along the house back a foot and half away from the building so there is air circulation, otherwise the siding will mold.
Gutter maintenance is a must, I get them inspected, cleaned, tightened-up, caulked along the top edge to soffit.
When I had a wood deck on the beach, I also redid the pigmented stain on it each fall so the water didn't rot out the wood.
Make sure all the walkway lights are working and porch lights.
I have primroses in my porch pots as they can survive winter and torrential rains.
