How to prepare pot for another plant?
Had a squash plant (container garden); it got aphids & since late in the season I pulled the plant up and threw it out. I'd like to put in cool weather planting but where do the aphids go -- are they in the dirt now?

I would dump the dirt, wash the pot thoroughly (including the outside), let it dry completely, and then start afresh with brand new soil.
You should clean the pot thoroughly with bleach and rinse, rinse, rinse. As for future critters, you should microwave your potting soil for about 1 minute before planting. Microwaving will kill bugs, eggs, etc. 100%. (but use a plastic bag or disposable container for the dirt before putting it in the microwave!)
I had aphids in one of my pots. .dump potting soil sprayed pot with white vinegar. .let sit for about fifteen minutes. .washed pot with dish soap. .hose cleaned. .let dry in sun for one day before putting in New soil. .no more aphids. .Good luck. .
Clean it with soap and water and bleach. Leave it out in the sun for a couple of day and it should be good to go.
