How can I do an "unsanding" job?
I lightly sanded down a wooden chair to prep for painting, but now I'd like to bring it back to it's original luster. Is this possible?
If not, I had been thinking of painting it white with gold "ram horns" on the arms. Any opinions?

You can re poly or varnish the chair to have it be shiny again.
Look up everything you can on MinWax Polyshades. BE brave and go for it. https://www.google.ca/search?q=minwax+polyshades&rlz=1C1CHBF_enCA812CA812&oq=minwax+polyshades&aqs=chrome..69i57.9047j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I would go ahead and finish sanding it down to the bare wood, restain it and put whatever finish on it that you want. It is to pretty to paint, I think.
STAR 10 STRIPPER
I have used the poly shades and it is a good product. You could also just use old english on it, but the poly shades is the better choice. I apply it with an old t-shirt rag, not a brush. Please post a photo of your finished project. :-)
Char, I love the natural color of wood especially on wood furniture like you chair. I would finish the sanding and just put on your favorite finishing product. Personally I would use Tong oil to finish and use your bare hands to do it. The Tong oil will not hurt your hands and makes a lovely finish.
All of the above answers are great, varnish will restore the color like it was.
