The amount of grass and where it is is all important in the answer I could give. If it is a lawn you no longer want - Cut out the light with black polythene and it will die!

Glysophate (round up) my experience plastic needs to be applied when the grass is growing, usually summer to kill it, the plastic breaks down with the uv rays and you’ve got a big mess, picking up all the pieces that like to crumble as soon as you handle them. If you use salt, it will kill the grass if you get the concentration high enough but you might not be able to grow anything for years. A couple applications of glysophate which is usually cheaper under non brand name, will kill everything in its path and you will be able to grow in it. Another alternative is to get a sod cutter, remove the grass, sell it if possible, apply glysophate to whatever is left.
Stop watering it. Cover with black plastic. Spray with vinegar (what I used.) Before using Round Up, read this:
