Can I cover penny tiles in my bathroom without removing them?
My bathroom floor has ceramic penny tiles, I would like to redo the floor but don't want to have to remove them. Is there anything I can cover them with?
You need a waterproof backer board - like cement board as a base. Mix up a bunch of thin set and spread it on the wall and back butter the tile. You will need spacers and a level to get the first row level. Some suggest that you start with the 2nd row using a ledger board to get that row level and come back in and do lowest row later. Be sure to have a way to but tiles. Usually tile is put up with a brick pattern. I wrapped tile at a corner so the cut tile flowed around the wall. PREPLAN your installation. Add grout a day after tile. The job is similar to doing a floor, but gravity will create problems if you don't support the lower row and use spacers..
There are several how-to videos you can look at on the internet. Several experts have YouTubes on it. It really isn’t a simple job, but we tiled in a whole shower in an old house we are restoring. You will need waterproof sealer and possibly a special concrete board behind the tile if you want it to last and not mold from underneath. You can do it! Just make sure you study the available information online to avoid pitfalls. The materials aren’t cheap, so view the instructions! I wish I could remember the name of the best guy to watch - but just keep googling “tiling shower walls” and stuff like that and you’ll see the best ones. It’s work, but worth it!
