Katie, sorry to say that if you want to do it right, you will have to sand the cabinets down, prime with a good stain blocking primer, sand again, prime again, sand again and then put 2 coats of paint on the cabinets. You sand extremely lightly between all coats with 300 grit sandpaper.
A big job but worth it. Also buy some good acrylic paint. Using a sprayer will give you a more professional look.
Hope this helps.
I agree with Dee, however if you sand prior to priming, then use either a fine nap roller or an hvlp, you shouldn't have to sand in between coats unless dust has gotten on the wet finish.
If you are more concerned with fast and easy, only sand the bottoms of the doors to get the drippy residue off, plus any drips beneath the doors. Then paint the cabinets with chalk paint. No extra sanding as long as the cabinets have been cleaned of grease and dirt. One or two coats should cover almost any color, but if the color is really dark, either paint a coat of white paint as a primer, or count on a third coat. To save a lot of money, make your own chalk paint. Find dozens of recipes on Hometalk, Pinterest, and YouTube. Best wishes, Katie. ☺️
I agree, sanding the rough edges are important. Then make sure u clean well afterwards. It is super easy to paint your kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle.
Step one : Clean with White Lightning
Step two : Paint one to two coats of paint
Step Three : Use Gator Hide for a water resistant finish.
I am attaching some kitchens that have been painted with Dixie Belle Paint so you can see the outcome.
