Just like if you washed dishes by hand without soap- they may look ok but they aren't actually clean enough to eat off of.
Not sure what you are attempting to do. Are you washing your dishes and then placing in dishwasher to rinse them all at one time? If so, that will work. If you only use the rinse cycle, just be sure not to place any soap in your dispenser. You can rinse only, of course! and that is all that happens, though not making the best use of your appliance.
Your spouse will think they are clean and put them away.
It will only rinse with plain water what is inside, some people use it to rinse off the dishes so they do not harden before they actually do a full load of dishes later that day
