I recently moved from Florida to Arizona. Everything here is brown or tan. The house, the cinderblock walls, the yard. I don't like cacti and I have a blank canvas in the yard . What can I plant to make it look tropical? House and walls can't be painted due to HOA restrictions and keep in mind Tucson is very dry.

He has a wealth of information. Thank you. I understand Tucson may be a little dryer than Phoenix, but I will certainly contact their botanical gardens for recommendations.

Tuscon is dry because it's a desert. To get the tropical look you want, you'll have a high water bill. Also if you want to have a tropical look in your front yard, you may need to run it by your HOA to get approval. That said, Lots of colorful plants grow there like bougainvillea, lantana and bottle brush, also the ever popular petunia. Visit your local plant nursery to see various choices.

Didn't realize bottlebrush would grow here. Thank you. And yes, because of HOA regulations, I am limiting the landscape to the back yard. I also liked the video Rose sent. It makes sense to plant edible plants.

Go around to restaurants, check out neighborhoods. I’m in Phoenix, and I see Bird of Paradise, Lantana, Bougainvillea, and of course Citrus trees. And many “dessert” plants are stunning! Doesn’t have to be cactus.

Lorraine, thank you. That is exactly what I did when I got here. I've been here a week and noted most places of business have very sparse landscaping; maybe a tree or 2. My neighborhood is all rock and stones with the popular mesquite or palo verde tree, but not much of anything else.
