How to remove tree roots?
Would like to install a pergola after having a massive blue spruce removed. There are large tree roots in the area where we want to do the installation. Other than digging, is there an easier and quicker way to remove the roots?

Hire a service to remove for you. No replacement for good old fashioned manual labor unless you want to point and pay.
Sawz-all helps a lot. Stump dissolver chemicals take a long time.
We’ve had to do a lot of this with this years weather. As one other suggested you can use a saws all but you’ll end up ruining the blade if it hits the dirt. The best way we know of is labor intensive but it gets the job done. Dig around the stump exposing as much of the roots as you can. Then drill holes into the thickest part of the stump near the middle, thread a heavy rope or very thick wire or if you have a chain. Attach it to the back of your truck and floor it. The stump comes right out. If all else fails as someone else suggested...hire someone. Good luck!
