My fridge and coffee maker are plugged into one outlet and have to unplug the fridge when i make coffee and its fine because if im making coffee and the fridge is plugged in the breaker kicks out , and just today i unplugged the fridge to make coffee and the same time i had a an electric frying pan plugged into a separate outlet, both on and on separate outlets, What would be the problem? And can breakers get weak over time?

  • That's not the way electricity works. This site really breaks it down well.

Call an electrician out for a check up on your main. You should not have to unplug the fridge just to make coffee. However I would consider moving the coffee maker to a different circuit.

Most outlets in a kitchen are on one circuit breaker. Usually 20 Amps. Plugging to many items that would draw more than 20 Amps will pop the breaker. You need an electrician that can put the fridge on it's own circuit breaker. When a fridge turns on it draws the most current. I had a client that could not use a microwave and dishwasher at the same time. I just put the dishwasher on it's own circuit breaker. A lot of older homes were wired before dishwashers, microwaves, garbage disposals, and bigger refrigerators.

Yes. Breakers can & sometimes do weaken with age & time & occasionally need replacing.

HOWEVER, One other factor to be aware of is that years ago appliances were smaller, fewer in number in the kitchen, & would actually use lower current than many appliances of today. Though appliances have gotten more energy efficient with their sizes & features using electricity, please be cautious that you are not overloading your circuits with multiple appliances both small & large running at the same time.

To be on the safe side against fire, you may want to consider getting an electrician to check your breaker box & circuits to address any issues that might cause more serious problems from using multiple & larger appliances. Personally, I would make this safety investment rather than run the risk of being sorry.

    Hope this helps.
