Hi Michele. I would start by doing some raking and cleanup of any old branches, leaves, yard debris. Pick one area to work on. Maybe you want a patio or a fire pit? Another one might be a garden, either vegetable or flowers. Ask a neighbor for the flower heads from coneflowers or black-eyed susans to plant next spring. Save your pumpkin seeds this year to also plant in the spring. Start small so you don't get overwhelmed!
I agree Ann, clean it up, prune unruly shrubs and tree branches, mow the lawn and if its full of weeds apply Scott Weed n Feed, use a weed whacker to trim around the edges of any fence or areas a mower can't get in. Weed flower beds, apply landscape fabric before planting anything, I got mine this year at the Dollar Tree. I have also gotten hose sprayers, trowels, gloves etc and seeds n bulbs at the Dollar Tree in the Spring. This is a good time of year to buy yard tools as stores are selling at a discount to get out the store. Yard sales are good too, and if its something really expensive like a rototiller, rent it at the local equipment rental store usually $5-$10 for the day.
Maybe try a rock garden? You can gather rocks as you see them and fill with a $3 bag of smaller stones from Home Depot or Lowes.
1.are you a senior? Even if not there may be organizations or school with community projects to help you.
2 make it as simple as possible..resist resist resist thinking..I like this that or the other. Think ahead..how are you going to feel having to take care of this that or the other before it gets overwhelming.
Some of the nicest yards here in senior estates( laugh at “estates”) are the very simple ones, with just a very simple focal point.
since you mentioned money.. can you barter ..ie baked goods....meals..cleaning jobs..household items stuck in garage?
Good luck...🤗
Many plants can be started from clippings, and clumping plants like bird of paradise and hosta need to be divided occasionally and the clumps taken off can be replanted. Most hobby gardeners are happy to share tips and clippings. When you are walking your neighborhood and see someone tending there yard strike up a conversation and you can make a friend and come away with some free plants. I have known people to dig up wild natives on the side of the road.
Can you post a pic?
