I put newspaper, it keeps out the weeds and eventually breaks down.
I've tried everything. But the best (and cheapest!) is to layer newspapers under the mulch. It not only disintegrates into the ground but contributes to enriching the soil. It is free and easy to use.

What I meant was they usually get recycled if you already have a subscription or buy newspapers so they don't cost you any MORE if you already had them. Lots of people still get newspapers (don't forget all of that junk mail you'd be throwing away)....ask people to save it for you.
