Borax and bleach
First, stop using fabric softener. Next stop using bleach. Bleach has a tendency to "gray" or "yellow" garments over time. Bleach also weakens fibers over time. I am a baking soda and vinegar girl. My 75 year old girlfriend swears by old fashioned bluing. Here are some options for you to try.

ONLY FOR WHITES. Rit Color Remover. I use a few glugs of hydrogen peroxide with detergent when I was my whites. Bleach tends to make whites dingy and breaks down the fibers over time. Initially you can soak the whites in some hydrogen peroxide and warm water for a while then launder as usual. Most oxygen detergents are peroxide based. A buck a bottle at Dollar Tree.
One cup of DISHWASHER powder and one cup of borax, dissolved in hot water. I usually do a double or triple recipe in my washer, and then let sit for 3 hours. Wash as usual and presto!
Wash them by hand on a scrub board! Whiter than white!!
If you try the peroxide, make sure that you wear rubber gloves, as it can be very drying, and leave whitish patches on bare skin.
Soaking your whites prior to washing them will help. I use one tablespoon of bleach and one tablespoon of good old-fashioned white in a tub of hot water. Then I wash the load with soap and Oxy Clean. Everything comes out clean and fresh. And WHITE.
I don't use bleach but soak with 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide and then wash with regular laundry detergent and 1/2 cup of super washing soda. Great brightening and whitening! If you want fresh from the store white you need blueing. Bleach and other cleaners cause a slight yellowing effect of fabric over time. Adding blueing to the wash corrects this and gets them looking new. For stains like underarm stain or collar stains use a paste of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. Apply and let rest for a few hours or overnight.
Alternate washing with bleach one washing then next tiime washing with borax
