Help with converting my UGLY fireplace?
I have an old eyesore fireplace and would like to build a surround however the bricks are uneven and obtrusive. Has anyone done this project or has any ideas/advice on how to clean fireplace brick to prepare it for an update and any suggestions on how to update it.
Thank you

Hi, you can paint the brick and give it some zest, see the link

Here is a link to Hometalk Makeover/Fireplaces. Maybe you can find the perfect look and instructions here.

It is already has good features. I would add a mantle or shelf at the top, and a board or row of vertical bricks at the bottom to cover concrete blocks and give it a finished look. Paint or stain any wood to blend with your decor. I love the color of your brick as well as the arched shape: whichever look you choose, it will be beautiful ! Best wishes.
You've already got a start on an italian look fireplace. I would stucco or plaster over the brick and add a beefy mantle . . . maybe build a faux piece from the mantle to ceiling and plaster that too for a true italian look (tapering so the part at the ceiling is narrower than at the mantle).
Add a big fat hand hewn beam for a mantle. You can find them online if you can't find one locally. I do like a tile trim around the opening on fireplaces. It makes a statement and there are beautiful tile to be had, antique, colors or natural stone. Box in the bottom and stain it the same color as the mantle. You will be decorating it for the holidays before you know it.
So many ideas and options from other Hometalkers in Kal's link.. My fireplace redo project is one.
