You could use barnwood as a chair rail place barn wood around windows and use barnwood for shelves.

If you're willing to tackle a bigger project, shiplap is the most beautiful think in farmhouse style. I did it on my entryway and it is my favorite area in the house. Here is how I did mine.

Paint the walls all the same color... even the paneling. (Looks like a comfortable room.)
